I’m crazy busy at work right now. I’m juggling my own job plus bits of two others for various reasons, and it’s nuts. I’m stressed. So what’s on my mind?
Jenny Craig commercials.
Seriously, the newest JC commercials are driving me insane. I find them totally insulting. In the two I’ve seen, a woman tries on an item of clothing that doesn’t fit. One is a bathing suit and the other a pair of jeans. In frustration, they turn said ill-fitting items into household products: the bathing suit becomes a cleaning rag, and the jeans get cut up into oven mitts. Then the ad reminds you that you can lose ten pounds fast (!) with JC.
So here are my issues.
- Most importantly, why is the weight loss thing so wrapped up in looks and clothing sizes? If you really want to sell me on weight loss, focus on health benefits. Show me someone who can’t chase their kids or who gets winded going up stairs. I know sex sells, and people are overly conscious of their looks, but I’m bothered that these commercials feed into that.
- Secondly, why household stuff? Do women do nothing but clean and cook? Would you ever actually turn too-small jeans into oven mitts?
I know it’s not important really. It’s just something that’s been bugging me SO MUCH lately. I watch the tv at the gym in the mornings, so lately I’ve seen the commercial a TON, which is sad considering I spend about a half hour in front of the television while on the bike/treadmill/elliptical. Weird.

You said it! This is exactly why I don’t watch the TVs at the gym. My workout morale drops with every commercial showing delicious food and hopeless weight loss campaigns. What I’ve started doing is bringing my own source of entertainment. My most-loved gym accessory has now become my tablet since I can tap into my DVR events from home through the free Dish Remote Access app. I can watch whatever I want without commercials! My boss at Dish let me try this out last year in the demo room, and it makes working out a MILLION times more enjoyable!
